A SOLO ESCAPE TO BANDUNG DURING THE QUIET DAYS OF TRAVEL

A SOLO ESCAPE TO BANDUNG DURING THE QUIET DAYS OF TRAVEL

It was a strange time to travel. The world was slowing down, borders were uncertain, and airports felt emptier than ever. But in the middle of all that uncertainty, I found an unexpected opportunity, a flight subscription deal that almost felt unreal. For around IDR 1.7 million, I could fly as much as I wanted for six months, paying only a small administrative fee of about IDR 20,000 per flight.

So I took it. And one destination that had been quietly calling me was Bandung.

Day 1, Arrival and the Freedom of Going Solo

Landing in Bandung felt different. The air was cooler, lighter, very different from Bali. The city sits about 2–3 hours from Jakarta by land, but it has its own personality: a mix of colonial charm, creative culture, and mountain air.

I kept things simple. Backpack only. I rented a motorbike for around IDR 80,000 per day, cheap, flexible, and perfect for exploring. Fuel was affordable too, roughly IDR 20,000–30,000 per full tank for daily use.  For accommodation, I stayed in a modest boutique hotel in the city center, around IDR 250,000–350,000 per night. Clean, comfortable, and enough for a solo traveler who just needs a place to recharge. That night, I started my ritual: exploring Bandung through food. Street food stalls, small cafes, and late-night eateries filled the streets. A simple meal, like nasi goreng or mie ayam, cost around IDR 20,000–40,000. Cheap, warm, and satisfying.

Day 2, Volcanoes and Misty Tea Fields

The next morning, I rode north to Tangkuban Perahu, about 30 km from the city center. The road slowly climbed, the air getting colder with every turn. Standing on the edge of the crater felt surreal. The massive volcanic basin stretched wide, with steam rising gently from below. The smell of sulfur lingered in the air, reminding you that this mountain is still alive.

Entrance fee was around IDR 50,000 for domestic visitors at the time, and parking was minimal. From there, I continued deeper into the highlands toward the tea plantations. The fog rolled in quietly as I reached the endless green fields. This is where Bandung truly slows down.

I stopped at a small tea stall, ordered a warm cup of local tea (around IDR 10,000–15,000), and just sat there… surrounded by silence, mist, and layers of green hills fading into the distance. No rush. No noise. Just presence.

Day 3, A Slow Morning and High Cliff

That morning, I didn’t rush. No alarm, no strict plan, just letting the day start on its own. I woke up a bit later than usual, enjoying the quiet comfort of doing nothing for a while. That’s one of the best parts of solo traveling: you move at your own pace.

By late morning, I got on my motorbike and headed toward Maribaya Hot Springs, about 45 minutes from the city center. The road took me through winding hills and cooler air, slowly leaving the busy city behind. When I arrived, the atmosphere immediately felt calmer surrounded by trees, fresh air, and the gentle sound of flowing water.

I spent some time there, just soaking in the warm mineral pools. The heat of the water mixed perfectly with the cool mountain breeze. It wasn’t just relaxing it felt like a reset.
Entrance at the time was around IDR 25,000–50,000, and it was worth every rupiah for the experience.

In the afternoon, I continued the journey to Tebing Keraton. The road got narrower and slightly more challenging, especially as I got closer to the top. But the real reward came when I arrived.

Instead of chasing sunrise like most people do, I came for the late afternoon and it turned out to be just as magical. The valley stretched endlessly in front of me, covered in layers of green forest. As the sun slowly moved lower, the light became softer, warmer, casting long shadows across the landscape.

There were fewer people compared to sunrise hours, which made the mom
ent feel more personal. Quiet. Undisturbed. Entrance fee was around IDR 15,000–25,000, and the view? Easily priceless.

Day 4, Rain, Fog, and the Journey to Kawah Putih

The last big destination was Kawah Putih, about 2 hours south of Bandung.
But this journey was different. Rain started early and didn’t stop. The road became wet, fog reduced visibility, and the temperature dropped significantly. My camera got soaked, my jacket was no longer enough, but somehow… it made the experience even more memorable.

When I finally arrived, the place looked like another planet. A white crater lake, surrounded by fog so thick it erased the horizon. The water had a pale, almost surreal color, constantly shifting depending on light and sulfur content. Entrance fee was around IDR 50,000–75,000, plus a shuttle fee to reach the crater. Despite the rain, or maybe because of it, this became one of the most unforgettable moments of the trip.

Every night, I returned to the city. I explored areas like Braga Street, where colonial buildings still stand, and visited Gedung Merdeka, beautifully lit at night. The atmosphere was calm far from the usual crowds. Simple pleasures, but they completed the experience.

After 3 nights and 4 days, it was time to return to Bali. But traveling during that time wasn’t simple.
Before flying, I had to take a COVID-19 swab test, something that felt unfamiliar and slightly stressful back then. Airports were quiet. Everyone wore masks. Distances were kept. It didn’t feel like normal travel, but it made the journey more meaningful.

This trip wasn’t just about Bandung. It was about a moment in time, when the world slowed down, and traveling felt different. Going solo made everything more personal. Every decision, every stop, every wrong turn, it was all mine. Bandung gave me everything:
mountains, mist, rain, food, silence, and a sense of freedom. And sometimes, that’s all you really need.

CELEBRATING GALUNGAN DAY IN MIAMI USA

CELEBRATING GALUNGAN DAY IN MIAMI USA

Galungan is an important festival in Bali, celebrated by Hindus. It symbolizes the battle between good (Dharma) and evil (Adharma). Galungan is a time to honor ancestors and uphold moral values. During the festival, special Balinese dishes are prepared, prayers are offered, and homes are decorated with penjor, symbolizing abundance and fertility. Galungan fosters social bonding and emphasizes the importance of traditions and values in daily life.

As Balinese children living abroad, we celebrate the Galungan festival in the city of Miami, United States. Despite being far from our homeland, we continue to uphold our traditions and culture by commemorating this meaningful celebration. As overseas children, we feel it is crucial to preserve our traditions and celebrate Galungan with enthusiasm. Together, we collaborate to prepare all the necessary items for the celebration. We go shopping to buy ingredients for Balinese dishes, such as lawar, babi kecap, sate lilit, and various other delicious delicacies. These traditional Balinese foods have distinctive flavors and are an integral part of Galungan celebrations.

Additionally, we purchase ceremonial items, including flowers, incense, and fresh fruits, for the prayer rituals. We also work together to create event decorations, such as crafting small penjor (decorative bamboo poles) and weaving coconut palm fronds that we personally gather in front of our homes. The process of creating these decorations not only strengthens our bond as a community but also adds warmth and beauty to our celebration.

On the highly anticipated day, we begin our preparations in the morning. Everyone who is available lends a hand with enthusiasm, from decorating and cooking dishes to all other necessary arrangements. We work while joking and chatting, creating an atmosphere full of joy. We also invite some of our American colleagues to join our celebration and introduce them to Balinese culture. They eagerly don Balinese traditional attire and participate in the communal prayer with us. Experiencing the warmth of camaraderie and the uniqueness of Balinese culture amidst our American friends is truly impressive.

At 9 p.m., we gather to perform the joint prayer ceremony. With utmost solemnity and devotion, we honor our ancestors and pray together. After the prayer, we capture this moment through a group photo session and begin indulging in the lovingly prepared traditional Balinese dishes. The event continues with cheerfulness and joy. We engage in conversations, play games, and enjoy drinks together. The night grows late, but our spirit and togetherness remain ablaze.

Celebrating Galungan in Miami has become an unforgettable experience. Apart from uniting us as overseas children, this celebration also provides us with an opportunity to introduce Balinese culture to our American friends. All of this teaches us the importance of preserving and appreciating our traditions while fostering cross-cultural brotherhood.
I hope our story can inspire and remind everyone about the significance of upholding and celebrating our traditions, wherever we may be. Until we meet again in the next Galungan celebration!

ENJOYING THE BEAUTY OF MIAMI BEACH IN THE EVENING

ENJOYING THE BEAUTY OF MIAMI BEACH IN THE EVENING
WITH ELECTRIC SKATEBOARDS

Hello, everyone! I want to share our exciting experience in Miami as we enjoyed the beauty of Miami Beach in the evening. Together with my friends, Miko and Jeanz, we decided to explore this stunning beach using electric skateboards. The three of us were interns at St Regis Balharbour Miami, and on that day, we had the same free time from our busy work schedule. We decided to make the most of it by embarking on an adventure and immersing ourselves in the natural beauty offered by Miami Beach.

With electric skateboards, we glided along the beach. The fresh air and ocean breeze greeted us as we joyfully rode along. The beach views and the mesmerizing sunset scenery captivated us. We could feel the soft white sand beneath our feet as we strolled along the shoreline. The clear blue sky and pristine waters created a breathtaking backdrop. While taking in the beautiful scenery, we also enjoyed the thrill of cruising on our electric skateboards along the coast. Throughout our journey, we didn't miss the chance to capture beautiful photos as lasting memories.

The presence of towering buildings near the beach added a modern touch and unique charm to the landscape. These magnificent towers became an inseparable part of the captivating panorama of Miami Beach. As the day transitioned into darkness, we decided to conclude our adventure and head back home. However, the beautiful memories remained etched in our hearts. This experience taught us the importance of appreciating the beauty of nature, spending quality time with friends, and creating precious moments in life.
Enjoying the beauty of Miami Beach in the evening with electric skateboards was a delightful and memorable experience. It made us realize the significance of taking the time to explore new places and appreciate the natural wonders that surround us. We hope our story inspires you to venture out and embrace the beauty of nature in your own surroundings, creating wonderful memories with your loved ones. Until our next adventure!

GUNUNG PAYUNG BEACH

GUNUNG PAYUNG BEACH

Gunung Payung Beach, located on the southern coast of Bali, is a hidden gem that offers visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of more popular tourist destinations. This remote and peaceful spot offers stunning views of the seascape and is named after the Pura Dhang Kahyangan Gunung Payung, a Balinese Hindu temple complex that sits atop a nearby cliff. The white sandy beach is located in the Kutuh village of South Kuta District, Badung district and is situated in close proximity to Pandawa beach, another popular tourist attraction in the South Badung area.

Experience the thrill of adventure and natural beauty as you make your way to Gunung Payung Beach, located just a half-hour drive away from Nusa Dua. As you travel down the main Jalan Gunung Payung road, you'll be surrounded by the lush greens of the 18-hole Bukit Pandawa Golf Club and the rugged limestone terrain. Keep an eye out for grey long-tailed macaques, which are known to be shyer than those found in the Uluwatu Monkey Forest.

This coastal area relies on the participation of visitors in keeping it clean, so be sure to do your part by not littering. The entrance fee for Gunung Payung beach attraction is IDR 4,000 per person, and parking for two-wheeled vehicles is IDR 2,000 and for cars IDR 5,000. The beach is managed by the Kutuh traditional village, as is the case with Pandawa beach. In the parking area near the Gunung Payung temple, you'll find ample parking, toilets, and food and beverage stalls.

As you approach the cliff edge after visiting the temple, you'll be greeted by breathtaking ocean views and the soothing sounds of waves crashing below. The beach can only be accessed by a steep flight of stairs, around 300 in total, so it's recommended for fit and determined visitors. Once you reach the beach, you'll find clear waters with deep green patches, which are the growing grounds for local seaweed farmers. The sand is deep and coarse, and the waters are calm, making it perfect for snorkeling.

For those seeking an even greater thrill, head to the hill of Kutuh village east of Gunung Payung temple, where you can try your hand at paragliding. Soar above the coast of Gunung Payung with the help of experienced parachute pilots. With so many unique and exciting experiences to be had, Gunung Payung Beach is a must-visit destination for any adventure-seeker.

Discovering the secluded Gunung Payung Beach requires a bit of effort, but the reward is an untouched paradise free from vendors. Make sure to pack your own water and snacks to enjoy while basking in the natural beauty of the surroundings. The calm waters, protected by natural reef barriers, are perfect for swimming, but be cautious of sea urchins and high tide conditions as there are no lifeguards on duty.

This concert was not an ordinary event for me; it was my first concert experience. As a dedicated Post Malone fan, this moment was really special for me.
At the time I was doing a one-year internship at the St Regis in Miami. Despite being busy with work, I decided to take the time and energy to enjoy this exciting evening. I decided to go with friends who shared the same love for Post Malone's music. The concert started with an electrifying performance by Tyler Yaweh and Swae Lee who set the stage on fire at American Airlines Studios. Dazzling lights, roaring music and passionate fans created a truly unique atmosphere for this concert.

After an amazing opening, it was time for Post Malone to take the stage. And that's where the real experience began.
